Day 20: California

The motel was as advertised, with much yelling and slamming of doors all night. I did not get much sleep, plus I was excited to get back on the road and get home.

The section of Higway 101 from Fortuna to Leggett was fast and fun, winding up and around the western slopes of Shasta. I did think about how we had travelled so many miles and here we were having a wide open, beautiful mountain road with no cars and no cops, right here in my manor.

We joined highway 1 at Leggett. We could take 101 all the way home but Chris had read about Highway 1 on an adventure bike website and we wanted to finish on a good road, not just a freeway.

The first part of 1 was torture, really twisty, bad surface, bad light. Some of the hardest riding of the trip. Eventually we reached the coast. A lovely breakfast in Fot Bragg and then the long ride down the coast. There is a reason it is featured on an adventure bike site, the views are special. I am still on the much loved and guess what, I love it.And now I am home.

We made it.

  1. Nice one matey. Long bike trips really are something special. Glad you guys made it back sans otter mailings or bunny ambushes!
